Sea of Trees2024
Photographic Installation with Sound.
Sea of Trees is a photographic and sound installation captured in Aokigahara Forest near Mount Fuji. Known as jukai or the “Sea of Trees”, this dense, moss-covered forest grows over ancient lava and absorbs all sound, creating an eerie silence.
The forest has long been associated with solitude and spiritual reflection, often drawing people seeking to confront life and death. Some tie red ribbons to trees to mark their way—symbols of hesitation, hope, or the choice to return. Red ribbons running through the installation reflect this tradition, as well as the Japanese folk legend of akai ito, or the red thread of fate, connecting soulmates across time and space.
Through immersive visuals and sound, the installation invites viewers to feel the forest’s emotional weight—a space where the veil between the physical and spiritual world is thin.
