City Fabric
2010

Canvas print, 400×500 cm.

City Fabric depicts the entrance to an unfinished luxury apartment building in the city centre of Yerevan, Armenia. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, existing 19th century houses were demolished en masse to make way for these new complexes, in the hope they would attract diaspora Armenians to buy into their dream of the Armenian homeland. However, with most of the apartments unsold, many buildings remain unfinished. The only indication of what was meant to be, are the large fabrics covering the entrance, depicting computer-generated images of the prospective building. Fading and crumpled, they create a ghostlike town.
